Even as a child I was always a bit of a bowerbird, walking two or three paces behind my sisters collecting feathers, shells, washers, strings and other grubby treasures lying in the gutter. At the age of 12 I even came home with a case of cut-throat razors bought from a junk shop!

In the early 1980’s I studied 3D design Ceramics at Wolverhampton Poly making large Raku and Pit-fired porcelain vessels. This was the perfect environment to learn, understand and challenge aesthetics of shape, balance and proportion. After graduation I ran my own studio/gallery for a number of years whilst also teaching. Marriage and 3 children meant giving up ceramics but I still wanted to create.

This new start saw me collecting again... driftwood, buttons, beads, old tools, wires, all used to build wire together and decorate such things as mirrors, boats and even insects! Over the years my work has changed but the ethos, the need to reclaim and reuse vintage components is the driver of my work.

Now I am using antique metal components such as jelly moulds, tobacco and liquorice tins, cutlery and other quirky and discarded metal. After cleaning and polishing (but not destroying the patina!) I use pan-headed bolts and self-locking nuts - or occasionally soldering to birth my little characters hoping that they will appeal.

I have been visiting craft fairs all over the North West for some years but now I would like to reach a wider audience so here are some of my tin-pot Jitter Bugs to amuse and beguile you.If you would like to commission a special piece for a special person or occasion please get in touch
